Navigating divorce in the age of social media

On Behalf of | Apr 21, 2022 | Divorce

Studies show that Facebook, which has over 2 billion users, is mentioned in one in five divorces in the U.S. If you’re going through a divorce or separation in Maryland, here are some things you need to know about navigating social media during this time in your life.

Protect your sanity

One of the best things you can do is stay off of social media during your divorce. You don’t want to see your ex moving on with someone else and posting pictures of their new love interest. There may also be a chance that your ex is posting about your relationship.

You need to take this time to focus on healing and starting a new life after your marriage. If you and your ex have children, your focus should also be on providing proper care for your kids after the divorce. If you stay off social media until your divorce is final, your ex won’t be able to misinterpret or criticize anything you post.

Only post positive things

If you still want to be on social media while you’re going through your divorce, it’s best to ensure that all your posts are positive. Don’t post anything that could be seen as a negative or mean comment directed toward your ex. This could hurt or anger your ex and cause your friends and family members to start asking more questions about your divorce. You could post encouraging quotes to remind you that you’re strong and resilient in navigating this new phase of life.

Take advantage of privacy settings

Change your settings so that your relationship status won’t show in your profile while you’re going through your divorce. You can even change your settings so that only your children and close friends can see your profile. This can make it easier to manage your emotions during this challenging time and prevent a social media post from derailing the divorce proceedings.
